Mac Wilkins and Alberto Salazar would have been in Eugene for the Olympic Trials anyway, as coaches of athletes in the competition that begins June 27.

Stanley Floyd promises he, too, would have been in a seat at Hayward Field, watching his daughter Ebonie attempt to qualify for the Olympic team, as he did 28 years ago.

Mary Slaney and Fred Dixon live in Eugene, so their attendance wouldn’t have been surprising.

But all of them welcome the added lure of being on site next week for a reunion of the athletes who were selected for the Olympic team the last time the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials were held in Eugene in 1980, but were denied the opportunity to compete in the Moscow Games because of the government-ordered boycott of the event.
